Mining Impacts to the Human and Natural Environments
A compendium of resources and issues
Legal documents for all mining types:
Corkscrew Neighbors and Friends,
The final hearing on the Estero Group Mine will be held at Commission Chambers on Monday, June 16th at 9:30AM. The BOCC will review the recommendations of the Lee County Hearing Examiner (HEX) and will make a final vote on the application. The public is encouraged to attend and hear the BOCC comments on the case, however only those who testified before the HEX during the zoning hearing last year will be given opportunity to speak.
As you know, the HEX has recommended denial of this mine. Generally, the BOCC accepts the recommendations of the HEX and votes accordingly. But if they feel enough political pressure to vote the other way, they will do so – it has happened before.
So I think it’s very important that the County Commissioners understand that approval of a new mining operation on Corkscrew Road is not in the best interest of our community or that of the County’s DR/GR land use planning effort currently underway. In order to reinforce our position, we need a large turnout at this hearing on the 16th. I hope you’ll take the time to attend.
I’m putting together a short list of talking points on the case which you can use if you plan to testify before the BOCC. I’ll send this out to the list in the next couple of days.
Thanks,
Kevin Hill
